To date, legislative and budgetary efforts to reduce harm from foodborne illness outbreaks have been directed at protecting our food supply. However, food safety precautions will not guarantee 100% protection. Our report identifies improvements that could be made in surveillance for foodborne illness and suggests that the best chance we have to reduce harm when outbreaks do occur is to identify them more quickly and then respond with greater speed and accuracy.
