South Africa Delegation Meeting

On October 6, the Center hosted a delegation from South Africa and exchanged views on health security issues facing both countries. The South African delegation were:

- Prof. Glenda E. Gray, MBBCH, FCPaed, DSc (honoris causa), President of the South Africa Medical Research Council
- Dr. Koleka P. Mlisana, MB, ChB, MMedPath (Micro), Head of Medical Microbiology, Associate Professor, School of Laboratory Medicine & Medical Sciences, University of Kwazulu-Natal
- Marcel Golding
- Dr. Nombulelo Magula, BSc, MBChB, MSc, FCP(SA), PhD, Chief Specialist and Head of Division of Internal Medicine, University of Kwazulu-Natal
- Prof. Leickness Chisamu Simbayi, DPhil, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Research, Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)
Issues of discussion in the meeting included: national strategies for countering antimicrobial resistance; the development of diagnostic tools; research and advanced development of medical countermeasures; challenges in biosafety; strategies for measuring preparedness; and the Global Health Security Agenda. Members of the S. Africa delegation and the Center staff looked forward to staying connected and exploring possible ways of collaborating on some of these issues.
