Disease surveillance provides policymakers with information about infectious disease outbreaks, gives them situational awareness during an outbreak, and allows them to make more informed decisions in response. This article provides an overview of the different types of disease surveillance systems and their uses, and offers insights into the limitations, inherent uncertainties, and challenges faced by surveillance systems in the United States.
