Adjuvants have the potential to extend limited vaccine production capabilities, making them an invaluable, lifesaving tool for civilian biodefense. As policymakers consider various ways to protect the population from epidemics or large-scale biological attacks, understanding adjuvant research will become increasingly important. This article describes the function and purpose of adjuvants; recent advances in creating more effective, clinically predictable adjuvants; and the future of adjuvant use in the development of medical countermeasures against infectious diseases.
