Summary: From October 1-4, 2018, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security is offering an expenses-paid biosecurity fellowship opportunity in conjunction with SynBioBeta 2018: The Global Synthetic Biology Summit. The program is sponsored by the Open Philanthropy Project.
Background: Increased accessibility and democratization of synthetic biology have resulted in positive contributions to medicine and other fields, and also some new risks. Accidents or intentional misuse of synthetic biology could have significant consequences for our environment, ecosystems, or human and animal health. It is vital that as progress is made, we also take time to consider the risks and benefits of these advances and take precautions to limit any potential harms.
The Fellowship: Up to 30 emerging leaders from around the world who are interested in the nexus of biosecurity and synthetic biology will be sponsored to attend SynBioBeta 2018, to hear from and meet with practicing experts, and to discuss biosecurity as it relates to synthetic biology at special events with both peers and senior leaders. Fellows will have conference registration, travel, lodging, food, and transportation costs covered by the program.
Requirements and Expectations: Fellows will be expected to attend the full biosecurity fellowship program and all fellowship side events during the week of the meeting. Any fellows wishing to obtain a certificate from the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security showing their completion of the fellowship program will also be required to submit a short written reflection on the meeting and fellowship opportunity after the event is over. These fellow-authored reflections will be shared publicly online, along with other materials from SynBioBeta.
Eligibility: We encourage applications from all parts of the world by early- to mid-career professionals and graduate students working in synthetic biology, biosecurity, public health policy, defense or security policy, and related fields. Applications will be reviewed by Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and staff.
*Note: Fellows who are not United States citizens will need to be able to obtain a visitor visa (if required by the US Department of State) in time to attend and take part in the fellowship program.
